Bu ham maddeler, hem hayvanlardan hem de bitkilerden elde edilmekte olup, farkl\u0131 yap\u0131 ve \u00f6zellikte olmaktad\u0131r. Triterpenler de do\u011fada bulunan \u00f6nemli bir grup sekonder bile\u015fiklerdir. Triterpen yap\u0131s\u0131nda olan &#8216;skualen&#8217;; insanlar, hayvanlar ve bitkiler taraf\u0131ndan sentezlenebilen biyosentetik bir ara \u00fcr\u00fcnd\u00fcr. Skualen, yap\u0131sal olarak 6 izoprenmolek\u00fcl\u00fcnden olu\u015fan ve 6 \u00e7ifte ba\u011f\u0131 bulunan, 30 karbonlu doymam\u0131\u015f bir hidrokarbon, izoprenoit yap\u0131s\u0131na sahip, triterpenler s\u0131n\u0131f\u0131nda yer alan lipfilik bir biyomolek\u00fcl, kokusuz, renksiz s\u0131v\u0131 bir ya\u011f olarak tan\u0131mlanmaktad\u0131r. Bu bile\u015fik, ilk defa, Squalidae familyas\u0131na ait bir k\u00f6pek bal\u0131\u011f\u0131n\u0131n karaci\u011fer ya\u011f\u0131ndan izole edildi\u011fi i\u00e7in, familyas\u0131na atfen &#8216;Skualen&#8217; ismini alm\u0131\u015ft\u0131r. Daha sonralar\u0131 pek \u00e7ok bitkide de bulundu\u011fu tespit edilmi\u015ftir. Hem do\u011fal hem de sentetik y\u00f6ntemlerle \u00fcretilen bu metabolit, sahip oldu\u011fu \u00f6nemli etkiler sebebiyle \u00f6zellikle kozmetik, ila\u00e7 ve di\u011fer farmas\u00f6tik alanlarda olduk\u00e7a yayg\u0131n kullan\u0131lmaktad\u0131r. Skualen, emilim ve da\u011f\u0131l\u0131m veriminin y\u00fcksek olmas\u0131, farkl\u0131 yollarla uyguland\u0131\u011f\u0131 zaman v\u00fccut taraf\u0131ndan iyi tolere edilebilmesi, toksisite profilinin g\u00fcvenilir olmas\u0131 sebebiyle farkl\u0131 alanlarda ve birden fazla uygulama y\u00f6ntemine sahiptir. \u00d6zellikle terap\u00f6tik uygulamalarda farkl\u0131 \u015fekillerde kullan\u0131m\u0131 bulunan bu bile\u015fi\u011fin, tarih\u00e7esi, elde edildi\u011fi kaynaklar\u0131, etkileri ve kullan\u0131m alanlar\u0131, bu derleme ile birlikte de\u011ferlendirilmi\u015f olup; detayl\u0131 literat\u00fcr incelemesinin ard\u0131ndan kapsaml\u0131 bir \u015fekilde sunulmu\u015ftur.
